THE 2014 CROSSFIT GAMES SEASON IS ABOUT TO START ON JANUARY 15TH WITH THE OPENING OF REGISTRATION FOR THE CROSSFIT OPEN.
WHAT IS THE CROSSFIT OPEN
The CrossFit Open is the largest worldwide fitness competition ever. For just $20, you can compete with CrossFitters all over the globe in a series of 5 judged workouts. Over 140,000 people participated in the 2013 CrossFit Open and estimates this year are topping the 250,000 mark. That’s over a quarter of a million people!
HOW THE CROSSFIT OPEN WORKS
The CrossFit Open consists of 5 workouts over the course of 5 weeks. Each CrossFit workout will be released on Thursday night and athletes will have until Monday afternoon to submit their scores for validation by their CrossFit affiliate. Nobody will know what the workouts will be before they are released on Thursday night. The CrossFit Open database will rank all of the competitors from across the globe so you can see how you stack up!
The first workout will be named 14.1 (the first workout of 2014), the second will be 14.2, 14.3, and so on. These workouts are tough and they will test the competitors’ strength, speed, stamina, and toughness. This is a great time of year for CrossFit as it is the beginning of the competition season.
After the scores for 14.5 are in the books, the top 48 men, 48 women, and 30 teams will be invited to compete in each region. CrossFit Critical Mass is located in the Mid-Atlantic Region and the competition is stiff around here!
THE CROSSFIT OPEN AT CROSSFIT CRITICAL MASS (COLUMBIA, MD)
If you are in the Columbia, MD area of Howard County, Maryland, then come on out and get your workouts judged by some of the top CrossFit coaches in the region. Judging will be complimentary for CrossFit Critical Mass members and everyone else can have their workout judged for a $20 fee.
This year, CrossFit HQ will release the week’s workout on Thursday night. Once we know what the workout is, we will plan out Friday’s training. Our Friday classes will focus on skills and mobility that will be needed for the Open workout. We will also have some good conditioning work for our members who are not competing.
Members will have to have their workout judged by a Level 1 CrossFit coach before the deadline to submit scores on Monday. If the athlete cannot make it to gym over the weekend, they will have a chance to have their CrossFit workout judged on Friday. The majority of competitors will do their workout on Saturday morning and make-ups and re-dos will be available on Sunday during open gym.
Then the athletes will need to submit their scores to the CrossFit Games website before the end of Sunday night so that our team captain, Coach Mike, can validate the scores before the deadline on Monday.
WHO SHOULD COMPETE?
The workouts for the CrossFit Open are designed to be able to be done by anyone. However, some of the weights can be a little on the heavy side for newer athletes. I always encourage CrossFitters to consider participating the this great community event and to be a part of CrossFit history. However, if you are unsure about whether you should participate, consult with your coach and get a feel for what will be required of you. It is important to note… there is no scaling of weights during the competition – you have to perform the exercises at the designated weight in order to compete.
All competitors who are shooting for a spot at regionals need to have their workouts scored by asenior CFCM coach who has passed the CrossFit Judges Course. Arrangements must also be made to have those workouts video recorded.
