BUILDING AN ATHLETE
How do you build an athlete? That’s simple, from the inside out. The CrossFit pyramid has nutrition at it’s base and that is no accident. We have challenged our athletes to measure and record the foods they eat in an effort to improve athletic performance and overall health. We don’t like to call it a diet because the term “diet” implies short-term and we’re in this for life-long health.
TWO DIFFERENT WAYS OF EATING
There are two ways of eating we are paying attention to the most 1) Zone and 2) Paleo.
1 – ZONE
Zone focuses on balancing the three macronutrients – Carbs, Protein, & Fat in a way that keeps your hormones in check and helps keep you chemically balanced.
2 – PALEO
Paleo focuses on the types of food you are allowed to eat by excluding food-like items cavemen and women didn’t have access to.
We offered a brief tutorial on what to eat, how often, and how to keep a food log before taking the athletes that were interested to the local grocery store to pick up a solid few days worth of food. Athletes that participated in the food challenge earned points for turning in a log, being balanced across the three macronutrients and also for eating only Paleo approved foods. Each athlete was encouraged to combine Zone and Paleo to demonstrate the saying “Abs are created in the gym and revealed in the kitchen.”
WINNER OF THE FOOD CHALLENGE
The winner of our first food challenge, Justine Pfeiffer, has been able to lend a helping hand this time around. Justine organized a powerpoint presentation and came in on a Sunday afternoon to speak to our athletes about the challenge the day before it began. She then stayed after with three of our coaches to answer questions and give suggestions on meal plans, food prep and joined us in the grocery store afterwards. She even went so far as to use her personal before and after photos! She has inspired many of our athletes to take this food challenge seriously and the results are undeniable…with #inittowinit being thrown around and PRs showing up daily.
