The CrossFit Open is once again upon us! All of our hard work and hours grinding through those metcons programmed throughout the year have made us better than yesterday. This season is the season that brings us together. It reminds us how powerful and capable we are when we are tested as our friends shout for one more rep. The support from each other, claps, and cheers allow us to go the extra mile.
The first Open workout, 16.1, promised not to disappoint and oh it certainly did not. From logistic nightmares to our first “chest-to-bar” pull-ups for athletes Margaret Boehmer, Kristina Pannone, Erin Clarke, Tracey Perrick, and Dong Eom.
Over forty of our athletes signed up for the 2016 CrossFit Open. As part of our tradition, several intra-gym teams were assembled and had their first throw down of the season this past Saturday February 27, 2016.
Our top performers hard work paid off big time this week on the Rx division. Sarah Dwyer brought 1st place home and Leeza Malachevsky got in on a close second place. Emilee Tominovich came in strong in third place to remind the ladies that she’s coming hungry for those top spots. Our male athletes came in WOD-blazing with Adam Fisher securing first place over John Fink with Shayne Gerber giving maximum effort to secure his 3rd place.
In the scaled division, our athletes went hard and proved that the CrossFit Open is for everyone no matter what the scale is. Shout out to Cara Zaller for her 1st place, followed by a strong Noelle Verbocy and a quick Jenny Sciadini. These athletes promise to make the scaled division a very competitive one where everyone can still have lots of fun. Marcus Sciadini and Tom Puwalski made 16.1 cry for mercy and lunged through those eternal 20 minutes like the well seasoned athletes they are.
Coach Tola’s team won the day with the best score of the week. Adam Fisher and Gianni Pablos helped Team Nigerian Thunder neutralize a strong showing from Tim Willman and John Fink to claim victory. Team Tola battled Team Justine and the match came down to Lisa Lodovici and Philip Kennedy, at 13th and 15th respectively, giving Team Tola the only team with 4 people inside the top 15! Team Kim took out Team Justin with Shayne Gerber storming out of nowhere for a 3rd place finish. He showed that consistently training hard all year pays off. Dong Eom represented the women’s class well, her 9th place finish out of all women in the gym was huge towards Team Kim’s win. Old man Steve Carr finishes top ten in MD, showing he is capable of carrying his team, but Sarah Dwyer steps in and lets Grandpa know he can take it easy if he must. Team Duane beat Team Ali in the closest match of the week! Team Tola leads the Ballerz division and is Week 1 champion with the best score. Coach Kim was the only female coach to get a win, which gets her out to an early lead in the Shot Callerz division.
This is only the beginning of our journey! Lots of surprises and fun await. Stay healthy and continue training for the upcoming WODs which will continue to bring out the best in all of us as we continue to be the best and most fun community out there.
Thanks to Philip Kennedy for the awesome photos from Week 1!
