The May 2016 Athlete of the Month is a legend in these parts. This athlete goes by many names! Slim & Sexy, Sweetheart, and Munchkin. Still don’t recognize this incredible athlete?! How about El Nino or 6am BEAST?!
Our athlete of the month is a great ambassador and a heck of a poster child for the sport of CrossFit. Dr. Steve Carr’s (El Stevo) can be found terrorizing 0600 WODs. His soft-spoken, but direct and witty personality makes the first time you meet him special and every time thereafter.
We joke, but he seriously is one of the most dedicated, exceptional athletes you will ever meet. At times we also wonder what his 2 sidekicks would do without him.
Now, each morning you will find Steve outside of the gym no later than 5:45am. Once he walks through the door, he redirects his focus on his fitness and friendly competition with his 0600 family (to include a few timely jokes).
This was not always the case, the sport that he loved so much also caused him some pain.
Steve started CrossFit two and a half years ago. At that time, his range of motion was limited, but no one could ever question his strength and potential. He continuously spent hours in and out of the gym working on challenging movements, but routinely faced roadblocks due to his mobility. Anyone that knows Steve knew he would overcome that obstacle sooner rather than later. Post-surgery and a few months out of the gym, Steve gradually worked himself back into the 0600 routine. Now he was focused on his diet and mobility.
His transformation was summarized by this comment from one of his coaches. “I think the big thing is that he finally took control of his health and recovery. He was committed to recovery as a masters athlete, and putting in the extra work to help him sustain his career in CrossFit.”
Steve will say he is better because of his coaches, but we will say he’s better because of his persistence and settling for nothing less than excellence. He knows no other way, but to “AIM HIGH!”
He’s seen recent PRs in his squats, power cleans, and push jerks. Movements that he not only struggled to perform, but challenged him to increase weight. Now, his technique is starting to match his dedication and drive. Trust us, a healthy and motivated “El Stevo” is nothing to play with.
Please join us in congratulating Dr. Steve Carr as the CrossFit Critical Mass (CFCM) May 2016 Athlete of the Month.
