CrossFit Critical Mass is always looking for ways to expand and improve our fitness program to meet the needs of our athletes. The most recent addition has been the CFCM Skills Class lead by Head Coach Mike. Each skills class focuses on one movement, emphasizing and reinforcing the body positions and technique needed to improve that movement from the basics on up, which allows athletes to focus on finer skill work and develop sound movement patterns.
Skills Class is formatted much differently than our “traditional class”. First, the class is capped at 8 athletes. It is always conducted by a CrossFit Level 2 Coach with the help of another CFCM Coach. The strict 1:4 coach to athlete ratio allows for in depth discussion, progression, spotting, and drills specific to each athlete. Our coaches are able to assess in real time each athlete’s weaknesses and needs, and gear the development much more specific to the individual athlete’s needs.
Although Skills Class differs from a regular CrossFit class in that we rarely do a WOD or “strength” during this time, that's not to say it is not physically challenging. Skills class is extremely demanding in a different way. By targeted progression, we are able to identify muscle, mobility, and/or movement pattern deficiencies. In targeting the development of these areas, strengthening static positions, and introducing new and complex movement patterns athletes often find that they are sore in muscles they forgot existed.
The skills class is the best for quality coaching and progressive development of the intermediate movements of fitness like pull ups, muscle ups, handstand push ups, and the Olympic lifts. CFCM Head Coach Mike says “if you want to get better, and by better I mean, more proficient and efficient and moving your body through complex athletic movements like ring muscle ups, then you have to be coming to the skills class.”
